The San Antonio Riverwalk
The CPNP 2010 Annual Meeting is within walking distance of the San Antonio Riverwalk. The Riverwalk is a colorful and energetic area bustling with great restaurants, distinctive art, unique attractions and diverse entertainment. There is something for everyone, from scenic walks to an exciting nightlife.
Located in the center of San Antonio, the Riverwalk is a couple of miles of the San Antonio River's waterfront that now includes many of the finest hotels, restaurants, clubs, and shopping malls to be found anywhere. The Riverwalk is the second most popular tourist attractions in Texas. Of course, the most popular destination is the Alamo, one block away.
Beginning in 1690 through 1731, Spain established a series of missions, first in East Texas, and then in along the San Antonio River. The six missions along the San Antonio River now form the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park. Mission San Antonio de Valero, now just called The Alamo, is the first of these and an iconic image and scene of the epic battle.
As rivers commonly do, floods were a chronic problem. In September 1921 the historic flood killed many and destroyed the center of San Antonio [New York Times 9/11/1921]. After considerable debate and years of delay, Robert H. H. Hugman's plan, modeled on Venice, Italy, created the beginnings of the San Antonio Riverwalk . The Riverwalk continues to evolve into the beautiful and restful urban park you will see during the CPNP Annual Meeting.
The official Riverwalk web site provides additional information, coupons, photos and travel guides. Take a few minutes to see what you can do in your free time at the Annual Meeting!
