2009 Program Director Survey Results

25/27 responding (93%) during survey period 9/9/2009 - 11/18/2009

The survey was sent to all program directors in the Residency Directory. Several contacts were removed from the directory during the survey period (and therefore the survey group). Additionally, responses from the fellowship program directors were removed.

CPNP Residency Program Director Survey Results

Question 1 asked program directors to list the number of PGY-1 and PGY-2 programs offered. It was difficult to interpret the data from the survey question because it was in a complex table so a manual tally based on the CPNP web directory was completed by Julie Dopheide on 12-14-09.

There are 27 distinct residency program directors from 16 states in the U.S. with one program in Canada.

  • PGY-1 - 18 positions (range 16-22 depending on allocation of funding)
  • PGY-2 - 22 positions (range 20-24 depending on allocation of funding)
  • PGY-1 tracking into PGY-2 - 2 programs set up this way with 6 programs having the flexibility to do this
  • Fellowship – 3 positions in Maryland
  • Masters – 1 position, PhD – 1 position

3a.Please provide reason for not seeking ASHP accreditation status

  • ASHP paper work is by all accounts burdensome. The ASHP requirements for training are prescriptive and dull the creativity as to what you can do for a resident. Basically I can get more work out of the resident as a scholarly experience than I would be able to if the residency is ASHP accredited
  • Funding not definite, plus not required of me, and don't believe I need it
  • Unclear if funding / support will continue
  • We have completed our initial survey and are awaiting accreditation
