Course Objectives

After completing this course, the participant will be able to:

  1. Describe the etiology, risk factors, pathophysiology, and treatment of the following: schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders, neurological disorders, psychiatric disorders in children and adolescents, anxiety disorders, sleep disorders, substance use disorders, bipolar disorders, developmental disorders, psychiatric disorders in the elderly, eating disorders, personality disorders, seizure disorders, and depression.
  2. Identify common signs and symptoms based on the DSM-IV-TR criteria, the presentation, and clinical course of the above named psychiatric disorders.
  3. Resolve drug therapy problems by modifying the pharmacotherapeutic plan and developing an appropriate monitoring plan for people with the above named disorders.
  4. Develop a plan to prevent or manage adverse reactions and drug-drug interactions for patients receiving pharmacologic treatment for the above named disorders.
  5. Provide appropriate patient and family counseling for people with mental illness. Assist patients in identifying ogranizations that provide support and advocacy.
  6. Design an MUE, a plan to monitor for adverse drug reactions, and a plan for a new pharmacy service.
  7. Apply the joint commision standards to psychiatric pharmacy practice.
  8. Describe the role of the Institutional Review Board.
  9. Analyze the biomedical literature objectively using biostatistics and drug literature evaluation principles.
