Finding Common Ground Across the Psychosis Spectrum
Previously, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder have been classified as two separate diagnoses in the practice of psychiatry. However, several findings recently have called into question whether these disorders are etiologically distinct. Family and twin studies have established that schizophrenia and bipolar disorder are familial and heritable phenotypes with shared genetic factors. Both disorders also share key clinical features including psychosis, neurocognitive impairment, and suicidality. During this presentation, Roy Perlis, MD, MSc will discuss recent findings in genetic studies of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, as well as examine their implications on diagnostic tools and treatment. At the end of this program, the participant should be able to:
- Evaluate within a case example whether the patient meets DSM-IV-TR criteria for schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, schizophreniform, brief reactive psychosis, or substance-induced psychotic disorder.
- Analyze the appropriateness and results of commonly used rating scales for the evaluation and management of schizophrenia.
- Differentiate among all antipsychotics with regards to efficacy, adverse reactions, dosing, and monitoring.
- Design a monitoring plan for patients on antipsychotic medications for movement disorders using appropriate rating scales.
- Compare and contrast the various treatment guidelines for the management of schizophrenia.
- Assess the use of antipsychotics in special populations (e.g., treatment refractory, pregnancy/lactation).
- Solve drug therapy problems in patients with schizophrenia and/or movement disorders through the provision of appropriate patient education.
