Title: What Goes Up Must Come Down: Recognition & Management of Bipolar Depression
Location: Mission Ballroom

Program Description: The recognition and treatment of bipolar depression can pose a great challenge for healthcare professionals. This interactive session will use audience response keypads to work through case studies. Topics will include the Mood Disorder Questionnaire (MDQ), a tool that healthcare professionals can administer in their clinical practice to assist with the recognition of bipolar depression, as well as an update on the role of neuroimaging in bipolar disorder.

Learning Objectives
At the completion of this program, the participant will use interactive case studies to:
  • Apply the Mood Disorder Questionnaire (MDQ) to identify clinical symptomatology consistent with bipolar spectrum illnesses, including depressive symptoms.
  • Recognize comorbidities that often confound accurate diagnosis of bipolar depression.
  • Develop treatment strategies for management of bipolar depression that improve mood and outcomes without causing a switch into mania.
  • Appropriately incorporate antidepressants in the treatment of bipolar depression.
  • Outline developments in neuroimaging that may lead to improved diagnosis and treatment of bipolar depression.

Title: Pharmacotherapy of Bipolar and Other Psychotic Disorders: A Pathophysiologic Approach (Breakfast Program)
Location: The Hyatt Regency Islandia, Islands Room, San Diego, California

Description: Atypical antipsychotics are widely used as first-line therapy for the management of schizophrenia and, more recently, bipolar mania. Due to their therapeutic effects across a spectrum of psychiatric disorders, these agents are increasingly being used to treat a broad range of conditions in a variety of clinical settings. Since the atypical antipsychotics exhibit different pharmacologic profiles, clinically meaningful differences in effectiveness, (ie, efficacy in the real-world setting), tolerability and safety may impact overall patient health. This symposium will describe the expanding uses of atypical antipsychotics and how their different pharmacologic profiles may impact patient outcomes and influence choice of therapy.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:
  • Describe three approaches to the pharmacologic management of patients with acute mania
  • Explain atypical antipsychotics and mood stabilizers with respect to their efficacy and short- and long-term safety and tolerability profiles
  • Evaluate recent and ongoing clinical trial results in bipolar disorder and their impact on patient care
.

Title: "Out of the Shadow" Documentary Screening (Luncheon Program)

Description: This very personal documentary chronicles the filmmaker’s mother, Millie, and her family through Millie’s battle with schizophrenia, and her subsequent trials within the public health system.

Millie was just 25 with two small children when she was first plagued by the symptoms of schizophrenia. As mental chaos overwhelmed their mother, Susan and her sister Tina, struggled to cope with her. For years, the family's ignorance and shame kept Millie's behavior shrouded in a veil of secrecy. When her children left home, Millie life unraveled completely. Now, after 20 years of transience and inadequate care, Millie finally has a chance to reclaim her life.

A story of madness and dignity, shame and love, this intimate film illuminates a national plight through one family's struggle and helps dispel the stigmas and misconceptions surrounding this harrowing illness.

Praise for "Out of the Shadow":
"Out of the Shadow movingly captures a side of schizophrenia that few of us ever see, revealing the humility behind the disease without sentimentalizing it, and documenting the day-to-day injustices, tragedies and just plain frustrations experienced both by a woman who has schizophrenia and by those who love her."
Sharon Begley, Health Reporter, The Wall Street Journal

"I showed your documentary to our mental health agency, and people loved it. It’s emotionally powerful and well balanced on many perspectives. It’s a realistic view of the pitfalls of the "system," the lengths families must go to, the ravages of illness and the prospects of recovery. Thank you for sharing this. Thank you even more for making it."
Michael F. Hogan, Ph.D., Director, Ohio Department of Mental Health; Chair, Presidents New Freedom Commission on Mental Health

"This is a powerful and moving film that inspires whether or not you know anything about mental illness. I laughed, cried and was spellbound. Through the story of her mother’s fight with schizophrenia and her family’s struggle to not only survive, but to love, Susan Smiley brings new meaning to the word hope. Out of the Shadow is ultimately a story about a family that was torn apart by schizophrenia and unexpectedly healed by the making of this film."
Dr. Xavier Amador, former NBC Today Show contributor & NBC News consultant.
Author of "When Someone You Love is Depressed", "Being Single in a Couples’ World" and "I am Not Sick, I Don’t Need Help!"

"Ms. Smiley is unstinting in her honesty as she presents this very difficult and personal subject and that is what gives the film its forceful impact. Deserving of the widest possible audience, Out of the Shadow will clearly serve to inform the public and engage viewers about the challenges of coping with a mentally ill loved one. In addition, it will provide a wonderful training tool for all those in the mental health field, from students to practitioners."
Peter Weiden, M.D., Department of Psychiatry, SUNY Downstate Medical Center

"This is a remarkable film about schizophrenia, portraying one woman and her family’s experience with the illness. It is emotionally powerful, showing that recovery is possible, while at the same time exposing flaws in our mental healthcare system. Susan Smiley has produced a memorable, masterful work."
Mike Fitzpatrick, Executive Director, NAMI

Guest: Susan is documentary producer, director and writer. After making documentaries for 7 years about other people, she was compelled to turn the camera on her own family. The result is Out of the Shadow, a powerful chronicle of her mother, who suffers from schizophrenia, over the course of 5 years. Susan has traveled world-wide exploring a wide range of subjects, including Ice Road Truckers which she directed, wrote and produced (and survived the Arctic winter) to Minesweepers about de-miners working in Bosnia. She produced Writers of the Future for Sci Fi Channel, and was CoProducer of numerous other films, including Drag Kings, Rescue Swimmers, Bounty Hunters, Miners, Volcanologists and The Monster That Ate Hollywood. Her projects have appeared on Discovery Channel, History Channel, Sci Fi Channel, MTV and FRONTLINE on PBS. She is currently working on a new film about youth in California’s juvenile justice system.
