Tobacco Intervention Skills Training Program for Pharmacists

Learning Objectives
At the completion of the training workshop, participants will be able to intervene with all tobacco users, including patients/clients who are not yet considering quitting, by practicing skills as recommended by the U.S. Public Health Service Clinical Practice Guideline, Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence: 2008 Update
-
Describe the purpose of the Basic Tobacco Intervention Skills for Medical and Allied Health Professionals and the 2008 update to Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence.
-
Recognize the clinical issues related to tobacco use in patients with mental illness and substance abuse disorders.
-
Describe tobacco basics that includes the biological, psychological, and sociocultural components of tobacco dependence.
-
Identify the “Five A’s” and give a brief explanation of each with using the “Readiness to Change Model” and “Brief Intervention Flow Chart”
-
Conduct an integrated, stage-specific Five A Model brief intervention for tobacco cessation.
-
Recommend pharmacologic therapies for smoking cessation (i.e., nicotine replacement therapy, bupropion, varenicline, and off-label pharmacologic therapies) based on the cost of therapy, patient-specific disease states, adverse side effects, efficacy, and adherence factors.

Integrate tobacco cessation treatment and smoke-free environments into mental health care settings.
-
Recognize the importance of pharmacist’s interventions and teaching other health care professionals about intervention techniques for tobacco cessation.

Demonstrate knowledge of basic tobacco interventions and program objectives.
