Optimizing Cardiovascular Health in Patients with Psychiatric Illness

Individuals with severe mental illness such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and depression have an elevated risk of cardiovascular disease. There is a critical need to improve both the monitoring and the management of cardiovascular disease in patients with severe mental illness as a part of their overall care. This hands-on workshop will primarily focus on recent developments in cardiovascular medicine, highlighting where the NCEP and JNC guidelines differ from current evidence-based practice. Dr. Talbert will also highlight the role that the newly developed cardiovascular agents may play in treatment and future guidelines. Case-based discussions on best practices to manage the psychiatric patient with cardiovascular disease will be incorporated throughout the session. Read more about this session.
Seizing the MTM Opportunity: What Psychiatric Pharmacists Need to Know

Linda Strand, PharmD, PhD, is recognized in the profession of pharmacy as an innovator and one of the original architects of medication therapy management (MTM). In this keynote address, Dr. Strand will review the current status of healthcare reform legislation and the opportunities that it offers pharmacists. Drug Transporters and Psychiatry

Over the past decade, research in the area of pharmacogenomics has helped advance clinical knowledge of pharmacokinetic drug interactions. While there is a plethora of research data available, it is often difficult for a practitioner to apply this data to daily practice. C. Lindsay DeVane, PharmD, BCPP, FCCP, will deliver a keynote address discussing current research and literature that differentiates the roles of drug transporters in psychopharmacology, potential new drug therapies based on current knoweldge of drug transporters, and how research can be applied to patient care. Management of Aggression in Children and Adolescents

Children and adolescents with psychiatric disorders may exhibit pathologic aggression that is destructive, severe, chronic, and unresponsive to psychosocial/ psychopharmacological treatment of their underlying pathology as well as to psychosocial interventions specifically targeting aggression. Glutamate: The Emerging Frontier of Psychopharmacology for Schizophrenia and Mood Disorders

With increasing evidence, it is believed that dysfunction in brain glutamatergic pathways may contribute to the pathophysiology of schizophrenia and mood disorders.
