Session Summary

Drug transporters, especially P-glycoprotein, play an important role in drug delivery. During this presentation, basic pharmacokinetic concepts are reviewed. Then, the discussion on drug transporters and p-glycoprotein begins. This discussion will address therapeutic implications in clinical practice of drug transporters along with literature regarding this topic. The presentation will conclude with a summation of the topics discussed and audience participation.

C. Lindsay DeVane, Pharm.D., is Professor and Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, South Carolina where he directs the Laboratory of Drug Disposition and Pharmacogenetics. He received a B.S. in Pharmacy from the University of North Carolina, a Pharm.D. from Mercer University in Atlanta, and completed residency training at the Buffalo General Hospital. He then went on to complete post-doctoral fellowship training in pharmacokinetics at the Millard Fillmore Hospital and with the Department of Pharmaceutics at the State University of New York at Buffalo. In addition, he spent a sabbatical year training at the National Institute of Mental Health.

Dr. DeVane is an active practitioner and researcher with more than 275 publications and 120 abstracts involving many aspects of basic and clinical psychopharmacology. He was the first member of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology to hold the Pharm.D. degree and has received awards from several national pharmacy organizations for his research contributions to the field of clinical pharmacology in psychiatry. His current research interests include development of new drugs to treat psychotic and mood disorders, psychoactive drug disposition and effects in pregnancy and the pharmacogenetics of autism treatment. He is named to the editorial board of several journals, including Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Clinical Pharmacokinetics, and is the past-Editor of Human Psychopharmacology: Clinical and Experimental.

This course is provided online at cpnp.org and consists of the speaker audio and slides. A PDF file of the slides is also provided and access is available to participants indefinitely although ACPE credit is available only through the course expiration date.

Participants in this course must complete an examination and achieve a score of 60% or greater. Successful completion of the course also requires the completion of a course evaluation. ACPE statements of credit can be retrieved by participants online at cpnp.org immediately upon successful completion of the course.
