Session Summary

This one hour session will discuss the currently known risk of malformations, pregnancy outcomes, and neurodevelopment after maternal use of antidepressants, antipsychotic, and traditional mood stabilizers. We will also discuss data types used to determine safety of medications during pregnancy while highlighting the National Register of Antipsychotic Medications in Pregnancy (NRAMP) and the North American Pregnancy Registry. Finally, this presentation will provide tools for patient education to help discuss risk versus benefit of psychotropic medication use in pregnancy.

Alicia B. Forinash received her BS in pharmacy in 2000 and Pharm.D. in 2001 from the St. Louis College of Pharmacy. She completed a specialty residency in family medicine at Forest Park Family Medicine and the St Louis College of Pharmacy in 2002. She has been working at the St. Louis College of Pharmacy since residency completion. Currently, her practice site is at St. Mary’s Health Center in the Obstetric and Gynecology clinic and her primary responsibilities include asthma, hypertension, smoking cessation, epilepsy, and noncompliance management in high risk obstetrics; osteoporosis management; contraception; and preventative health. She is one of a handful of pharmacists in North America who practice in obstetric pharmacy. She is also the residency director of a new PGY-2 ambulatory care residency that is anticipated to begin July 2010.

Dr. Forinash is a board certified pharmacotherapy specialist. Also, she has received certified clinical densitometrist status from the International Society of Clinical Densitometry and is one of only a few pharmacists who have received this certification.

Dr. Forinash has published articles in contraception, levetiracetam in pregnancy, several chapters in the first women’s health pharmacy textbook, and academic and professional dishonesty (accepted). Currently, she is involved in research projects with asthma and vaccine administration. She serves on the editorial board for the Annals of Pharmacotherapy for women’s health and is currently the chair-elect for the Women’s Health PRN for ACCP.

Compare cognitive outcomes of children after prenatal exposure to antidepressant, antipsychotic and traditional mood stabilizing medications.
Explain the role and limitations of the National Register of Antipsychotic Medications in Pregnancy (NRAMP) and the North American Pregnancy Registry in the pharmacovigilance of in utero exposure to psychotropic drugs.
Identify pharmacists’ role in patient education regarding risk versus benefit of psychotropic drugs during pregnancy.

This course is provided online at cpnp.org and consists of the speaker audio and slides. A PDF file of the slides is also provided and access is available to participants indefinitely although ACPE credit is available only through the course expiration date.
