Session Summary

During the past few years, the comorbidity of affective disorders and epilepsy has been “re-discovered”. This comorbidity has implications not only in antiepileptic drug (AED) selection, may also shed insight into the pathophysiology of this disorder. This presentation will discuss current treatment choices for various seizure disorders, along with a brief discussion regarding common psychiatric uses of various marketed AED. Common pathophysiological mechanisms of epilepsy and depression will be discussed, as well as an update on current perspectives regarding suicide risk with AEDs.

Barry E. Gidal is a Professor of Pharmacy and Neurology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, School of Pharmacy and Department of Neurology. He is also the Chair of the Pharmacy Practice Division at that institution. Dr. Gidal received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Utah, and his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Washington in Seattle. He has also completed his residency as well as a research fellowship in Clinical Pharmacokinetics at the University of Washington.

Dr. Gidal's research interests are in the pharmacotherapy of epilepsy. He has numerous research, clinical publications and book chapters relating to antiepileptic drug pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics and drug interactions in adult patients with epilepsy. Dr. Gidal maintains an active clinical practice at the William S. Middleton VA hospital Epilepsy Clinic. In particular, his interests are in the use of antiepileptic drugs in the elderly patient with epilepsy.

Dr. Gidal has served on the editorial boards for several journals including Epilepsia, Epilepsy Research, Epilepsy & Behavior and Annals of Pharmacotherapy. Dr. Gidal is a member of several professional organizations including the American Epilepsy Society, where he serves on several committees. He is also a member of the New AED Assessment committee for the American Academy of Neurology, AES Continuity of Care and Generic Drug committee.

Data regarding SSRI and ketamine use in epilepsy will be presented.

Learning Objectives

Identify the prevalence of comorbid psychiatric conditions in patients suffering from epilepsy.
Review commonly prescribed medications used of the treatment of seizure disorders and highlight which agents may also be beneficial for the treatment of mental health conditions.
Identify anticonvulsant medications with neuropsychiatric side effects that may have the potential to exacerbate mental health conditions.
Discuss the issue of suicidality and antiepileptic medications and provide recommendations for monitoring of patients started on these agents.

This course is provided online at cpnp.org and consists of the speaker audio and slides. A PDF file of the slides is also provided and access is available to participants indefinitely although ACPE credit is available only through the course expiration date.

Participants in this course must complete an examination and achieve a score of 60% or greater. Successful completion of the course also requires the completion of a course evaluation. ACPE statements of credit can be retrieved by participants online at cpnp.org immediately upon successful completion of the course.
