How do pharmacists help patients with mental illness and neurologic disorders through CPNP?
CPNP, the College of Psychiatric and Neurologic Pharmacists, is committed to continually providing patients and families with education about their diseases and treatment. CPNP has a close relationship with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) to provide education to consumers. Currently, CPNP members author information sheets regarding psychiatric medications (http://www.nami.org/template.cfm?section=About_Medications ). In addition, CPNP members answer patient medication questions in a series called “Ask the Psychiatric Pharmacist .” Members also provide a booth at the annual NAMI convention to answer medication questions and may offer information sessions regarding medications. CPNP continually explores new ways to provide additional services to consumers and their families.
While CPNP is not a direct-to-consumer organization, many of this group’s activities help consumers indirectly. For example, members of CPNP:
- Promote excellence in pharmacy practice and education.
- Advance the quality of research and develop new knowledge to optimize the treatment of psychiatric and neurologic disorders.
- Facilitate the dissemination of information regarding psychiatric and neurologic pharmacotherapy.
- Promote and support certification within the specialty of psychiatry and neurology.
