Stigma and Psychiatric Disorders [VIDEO]

At the 2015 CPNP Annual Meeting, the Foundation supported programming entitled “Stigma and Psychiatric Disorders: Understanding and Managing Personal Biases." That program is available as a resource for all healthcare practitioners.

Stigma Research Project

The Foundation has placed a priority upon enhancing our understanding of the issues around stigma and social distancing among community pharmacists as a beginning point to make inroads in decreasing stigma among all healthcare providers. The Foundation collaborated with Dr. Vincent Giannetti and colleagues at the Duquesne University Mylan School of Pharmacy to explore community pharmacists’ knowledge of and attitudes toward mental illness, comfort and confidence in dealing with persons with mental illness, and the services they provide to this population via a comprehensive national survey.

The results of the survey were compiled and published in a paper titled, Community pharmacists and mental illness: a survey of service provision, stigma, attitudes and beliefs.

The AAPP Foundation encourages the use and reference of this paper for pharmacies working to become more mental health friendly, for the training and education of community pharmacists, for research, etc.

Those who participated in this project include Charlie Caley, Jerry McKee, Barbara Wells, and Dean Najarian. Collaborators from Duquesne University include Vince Gianetti, Khalid Kamal, Jordan Covvey, Tyler Dunn, and Pratyusha Vadagam.

2014 Student Travel Grants

The Foundation provided $7,500 in grants providing registration and partial travel support for 15 students to attend CPNP 2014. CPNPF will be providing $7500 in grant support for CPNP 2015 as well to benefit 15 students desiring to attend CPNP 2015 in Tampa, April 19-22, as they explore a career in neuropsychiatric pharmacy.

2014 PSA Art Awakenings Exhibit

The College of Psychiatric and Neurologic Pharmacists Foundation collaborated with PSA Art Awakenings at CPNP 2014 in Phoenix, sponsoring an art and jewelry exhibit and ice cream social for all 620 meeting attendees. All displayed art and jewelry were for sale, and all sales dollars went to PSA Art Awakenings to support their vitally important rehabilitation work and their clients.

2013 Documentary Screening of "Of Two Minds"

Over 100 individuals attended the first CPNP Foundation event during the 2013 CPNP Annual Meeting in Colorado Springs. OF TWO MINDS is an award-winning, feature documentary directed by Lisa Klein and Doug Blush. Filmed over three years, OF TWO MINDS weaves together stories from across America of the incredible highs and devastating lows of bipolar disorder.

2012 Establishment of Comprehensive Medication Management Network

The Foundation created the CMM Network, a group of CPNP members providing CMM who meet monthly by conference call to discuss the opportunities and challenges before them and share strategies for advancing their practices and helping others to understand CMM as a model to achieve integrated patient-centered care and improved clinical outcomes. The CMM Network is slated to transition into one of the first Communities within CPNP, a new networking platform expected to be announced and launched in April 2014.

"Characterizing the Relationship Between Individuals With Mental Health Conditions and Community Pharmacists" Survey Results

The CPNP Foundation, in collaboration with NAMI, conducted an online survey of individuals with mental health conditions, or family members, about their interactions with their community pharmacists. Over 1,000 individuals responded to the survey with 65 percent of respondents being individuals with a mental health condition. Eighty percent of all respondents reported that they exclusively used a community pharmacy to fill their prescriptions for mental health medications. Responses demonstrate several opportunities in the areas of access to pharmacists, privacy, professional relationship-building, and increased assistance with effectiveness or safety monitoring of mental health medications. Read the survey report for additional information and key findings.
