CPNP Participates in 2010 NAMI Annual Convention
For the sixth consecutive year, CPNP participated extensively in the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) National Convention held in Washington, D.C., June 30-July 3. The 2010 NAMI National Convention hosted several thousand consumers, caregivers and healthcare professionals.
According to Steve Burghart, PharmD, BCPP, MBA and Consumer Relations Committee Vice Chair, attendees at the NAMI Convention are “so grateful and appreciative making participation in this convention incredibly rewarding as a result.”
CPNP 2010 Annual Meeting Recap
San Antonio, Texas served as host city for the College of Psychiatric and Neurologic Pharmacist’s 13th Annual Meeting held April 18-21 This four-day conference hosted 450 attendees and featured over 20 hours of cutting-edge scientific presentations, 4.5 hours of industry supported symposia and a record number 142 scientific poster presentations.
CPNP Announces Saklad Memorial Award and Research Award Recipients at the 2010 CPNP Annual Meeting
CPNP was honored to present the Saklad Memorial Award at the April 2010 CPNP Annual Meeting for the thirteenth time. This award celebrates the life and work of the late Judith J. Saklad. Dr. Saklad was a founding member of CPNP and nationally recognized as an innovator of pharmaceutical care to children and adults with serious mental disorders, developmental disabilities and mental retardation.

New research shows that the "gateway effect" of marijuana -- that teenagers who use marijuana are more likely to move on to harder illicit drugs as young adults -- may be overblown.
Scientists identify protein that spurs formation of Alzheimer's plaques
In Alzheimer's disease, the problem is beta-amyloid, a protein that accumulates in the brain and causes nerve cells to weaken and die. Drugs designed to eliminate plaques made of beta-amyloid have a fatal problem: they need to enter the brain and remove the plaques without attacking healthy brain cells. New research, however, suggests that treatments modeled on the blockbuster cancer drug Gleevec could be the solution.
Text messages reveal the emotional timeline of September 11, 2001
The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, have been called the defining moment of our time. Thousands of people died and the attacks had huge individual and collective consequences. But less is known about the immediate emotional reactions to the attacks. For a new study, researchers analyzed text messages sent on September 11, 2001 for emotional words. They found spiking anxiety and steadily increasing anger through that fateful day.
