CPNP Involved in Health Care Reform
The College of Psychiatric and Neurologic Pharmacists (CPNP) has been a member of the Leadership for Medication Management (LMM) since its founding in working to expand opportunities for pharmacists to provide patient care services under the Medicare program.
With the healthcare reform talks dominating the national legislative landscape, the LMM has merged its efforts into a larger group of pharmacy organizations called the Health Care Reform Stakeholders (HCR). CPNP has endorsed the HCR principles and is working collectively with 14 other associations and organizations to ensure that decisions made to reform our health care system should enhance, fully recognize and utilize the professional skills and competencies of pharmacists.
Raymond C. Love, PharmD, BCPP, FASHP, Professor and Associate Dean at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy, represents CPNP on HCR. According to Dr. Love, “This is a historic moment for the pharmacy profession as we enter into the effort to reform our health care system. I am proud that CPNP and a broad array of its pharmacy partners have put aside their individual agendas to promote what is best for our patients and craft a better health care system. We are hopeful that health care reform will take advantage of pharmacy’s unique and proven ability to improve access to health care while improving quality and controlling costs.”
CPNP will continue to keep members abreast of HCR activities and expects to play an even larger role in the health care reform debate through the CPNP Legislative Committee to be formed in August.
