During Virtual CPNP 2021, CPNP presented the 2021 Judith J. Saklad Memorial Award to Cherry W. Jackson PharmD, FASHP, FCCP, BCPP, Professor of Pharmacy, Auburn University, Professor of Medicine, University of Alabama, Birmingham, AL.
The Judith J. Saklad Memorial Award is presented annually to a senior psychiatric pharmacy practitioner who has achieved a level of professional distinction and represents the qualities and ideals of professional enthusiasm, a passion for optimizing patient care, and continuing dedication to the practice of psychiatric pharmacy. The Saklad Memorial Award is named after the late Judith J. Saklad.
Dr. Jackson is a Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice in the Harrison School of Pharmacy at Auburn University, and Clinical Professor of Medicine in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurobiology at the University of Alabama, Birmingham. Prior to coming to Auburn University she was Professor and Assistant Dean at the South University School of Pharmacy in Savannah, Georgia. Prior to moving to Georgia, she had a 12 year career at the Medical University of South Carolina where she held academic appointments in the Colleges of Pharmacy and Medicine. At the Medical University of South Carolina she served as Director of Psychiatric Pharmacy Practice Residencies, Clinical Coordinator and Director of Pharmacy Services. She received a BS degree in biology from Winthrop University and a BS degree in Pharmacy at the Medical University of South Carolina. She then completed a post-graduate Doctor of Pharmacy degree at the Medical University followed by an ASHP Accredited Residency in Psychiatric Pharmacy Practice.
Dr. Jackson is a fellow of both the American Society of Health System Pharmacists (FASHP) and the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (FCCP). She is a founding member of CPNP and served on the founding CPNP Board of Directors as its first Secretary. After serving as Secretary of CPNP she was elected as President in 2001. She also served on the CPNP Board of Directors as a Past-President Advisor. She was part of the inaugural group of pharmacists to become board certified in psychiatric pharmacy practice (BCPP) in 1996. She has been active in national and state professional pharmacy organizations and has held both elected and appointed offices in those organizations. She lectures and publishes extensively and currently has over 140 peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, posters and scientific abstracts. She has mentored over 700 pharmacy students, residents, graduate students, and international faculty and clinicians.
Dr. Jackson’s clinical research interest is in the treatment of serious mental illness (SMI), pharmacogenomics, and the adverse effects of psychotropic drugs.
