Program Philosophy

The purpose of this PGY2 psychiatry pharmacy residency program is to build on Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) and PGY1 pharmacy residency education to contribute to the development of psychiatric clinical pharmacy practitioners who are responsible for medication-related care of patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings with a variety of mental health disease states, who are eligible for psychiatric pharmacy positions and/or faculty positions, and who are eligible for board certification.

Site Special Features

The Salisbury VA Health Care System (VAHCS) includes the W.G. (Bill) Hefner VA Medical Center in Salisbury, NC, as well as outpatient Health Care Centers (HCCs) in Kernersville, NC and Charlotte, NC, and a Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) in Charlotte, NC. The Salisbury VAHCS provides medical, surgical, psychiatric, oncology and ambulatory care services to over 92,000 Veterans in the central Piedmont service area. Salisbury VAHCS has clinical pharmacy specialists with prescribing privileges in primary care, pain management, long-term care, home-based primary care, mental health, infectious disease, hematology/oncology, and acute care. The medical center in Salisbury has an in-house Community Living Center providing long-term care and hospice care for Veterans.
The Salisbury VAHCS is affiliated with multiple Schools of Pharmacy including the University of North Carolina, Campbell University, Wingate University, High Point University, University of South Carolina, University of Florida and several others. It is also affiliated with Wake Forest University School of Medicine and Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine. Salisbury VAHCS has five PGY1 pharmacy residents. It also serves as a training site for students and residents in multiple other disciplines, including: nursing, dentistry, optometry, pharmacy, psychiatry, psychology, rehabilitation and medicine.
Salisbury, NC is conveniently located near several major North Carolina cities, including Charlotte, Winston-Salem and Greensboro. Salisbury is within driving distance of the mountains (3 hours) and beaches (4 hours). The region has a rich culture and offers many social, historic, and sporting events year-round. Salisbury has close proximity to the Blue Ridge mountains (2-3 hours) and several North Carolina beaches (4 hours), as well as being within a 4-5 hour drive of other major cities including Charleston, SC, Savannah, GA, Richmond, VA, and Washington DC.
