Target Audience

This application-level activity is designed for pharmacists and other healthcare professionals with minimal experience in psychiatry who have an interest in learning more about the treatment of depression.

Session Summary

This course is designed to provide participants with minimal experience a review of evidenced-based first line strategies for the treatment of depression. The goal is that participants will be able to formulate an effective and safe drug therapy plan that can be implemented in a patient with uncomplicated depression. The course will require 1 hour for completion and will consist of review of a recommended reading and completion of a patient case study. At the conclusion of the course, an evidence-based key will be provided for the case.

Course Requirements

You will proceed through the following steps to satisfactorily complete this course:

  • Complete the pre-test before starting the activity. (login first)
  • Review the full content of the activity and reflect upon its teachings.
  • Complete the post-test at the end of the activity no later than the closing activity date. (login first)
  • Complete the evaluation at the end of the activity. (login first)
  • If necessary, complete the post-test retest no later than the closing activity date. (login first)
  • Receive a passing grade (70%).
  • Provide the necessary details in your profile to ensure correct reporting by CPNP to CPE Monitor. (login first)

The course consists of review of a recommended reading(s) and completion of a patient case study. At the conclusion of the course, an evidence-based key will be provided for the case. If the recommended reading is a CPNP product, it is provided. If not, it is the responsibility of the participant to locate the reading.

Learning Objectives

  1. Recognize the symptoms, clinical features, and treatment goals for depression.
  2. Recommend and optimize appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic therapy for patients with depression.
  3. Develop an appropriate treatment plan and monitoring for a patient with depression on the basis of individual patient characteristics.
  4. Educate patients and caregivers on taking medications for depression.
