Target Audience

This course is designed for pharmacists, nurse practitioners or other health care professionals involved in the comprehensive medication management of psychiatric and/or neurological patients.

Session Summary

Many psychiatric pharmacists may encounter patients with narcolepsy, but few psychiatric pharmacists understand the complex diagnostic parameters and treatment guidelines. Multiple medications may be used to treat narcolepsy, including traditional stimulants, modafinil, certain antidepressants, atomoxetine, and sodium oxybate. Many patients living with narcolepsy also experience disrupted nighttime sleep. Sodium oxybate and ritanserin may be helpful in improving nighttime sleep in narcolepsy but many patients may also find themselves being treated (by a physician or self-treating) with traditional sleep medications, both prescription and over-the-counter. Overuse of medications may lead to adverse effects and overall decompensation.
