Target Audience

This course is designed for pharmacists and/or other healthcare professionals involved in the medication management of individuals living with psychiatric, neurologic and/or substance use disorders.

Session Summary

Substance use disorders and their impact on healthcare providers and pharmacists in particular is rarely discussed. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, it is estimated that 8% to 12% of health care workers have substance use problems. Furthermore, 11% to 15% of pharmacists, at some time in their career, are confronted with alcohol and/or drug dependency problems, and the median age of recovering pharmacists is 43 years. Psychiatric and Neurologic pharmacists receive ongoing training surrounding the recognition and treatment of substance use disorders, however, rarely does the topic of recovery among pharmacists occur.
