Target Audience

There is a well-known clinical gap between the management of pain and behavioral health care. Given the opioid overdose death epidemic in the US, it is imperative that CPNP provide ongoing education on appropriate use of opioid medications as well as ways to advocate for opioid overdose prevention and management.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe the history of opioid medication use.
  2. Analyze appropriate use of opioids for chronic pain management using provided clinical cases.
  3. Examine the relationship between pain management, behavioral health, and substance use.  
  4. Choose methods to treat opioid use disorder while concurrently treating pain.
  5. Demonstrate opioid overdose management strategies and methods for naloxone rescue advocacy.
