Registration, Fees, and Target Audience

This pre-meeting workshop requires payment of an additional fee of $50 for students and $150 for non-students (a value of $170). All participants who attend both days will receive a 3-year certification in Mental Health First Aid. Although the session content is designed for the trainee audience, other attendees are welcome to register.

Mental Health First Aid is an 8-hour certificate program developed to teach participants how to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. The evidence behind the program demonstrates that it helps trainees identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illness and substance use disorders. The workshop will be offered to students over two, half days. The workshop is supported and subsidized by the CPNP Foundation. Part 1 will begin on Saturday, April 21 from 1:00-6:00 PM. Part 2 will take place the following day, Sunday, April 22 from 8:00-11:15 AM. To obtain certification, participants must attend each session in full. 

Following the event, participants will receive a certificate from Mental Health First Aid USA acknowledging certification which is valid for 3 years. A limited number of spaces are available, so interested students are encouraged to reserve their seats as early as possible.

Instructors

Jerry McKee, PharmD, BCPP, MS

Jerry McKee is a psychiatric pharmacy specialist with over 30 years in public mental health systems in inpatient psychiatry and residential developmental disabilities, academia, and correctional mental health services. Jerry is Board Certified in Psychiatric and Neurologic Pharmacy, having received his undergraduate and graduate pharmacy training at UNC, and currently serves as psychiatric clinical pharmacy specialist with Mission Health in Asheville, NC.  He serves as an active member of many professional organizations, including the North Carolina Association of Pharmacists, past president of the College of Psychiatric and Neurologic Pharmacists and current Foundation Board member, past member and chair of the Board of Pharmacy Specialties Psychiatric Specialist Council, and current member of the Board of Pharmacy Specialties Executive Board of Directors representing psychiatric pharmacy. Jerry is a certified adult Mental Health First Aid instructor and is an staunch advocate for reducing stigma associated with persons who have a mental illness.

 

Talia Puzantian, PharmD, BCPP

Dr. Puzantian is Associate Professor of Clinical Sciences at Keck Graduate Institute School of Pharmacy. She received her BS in Psychobiology from UCLA and her PharmD from the UCSF School of Pharmacy, and completed a psychiatric pharmacy practice residency at LA County/USC.

Dr. Puzantian has over 25 years of psychiatric pharmacy experience in academia and clinical practice. She was in the first group of specialists to become a Board Certified Psychiatric Pharmacist and has, in the past, served as the Chair of the Specialty Council on Psychiatric Pharmacy for the Board of Pharmaceutical Specialties. She is an active member of the College of Psychiatric and Neurologic Pharmacists (CPNP) and co-advisor to the KGI student chapter of CPNP. In addition to teaching and her research interest in the role of community pharmacists in opioid stewardship, she currently practices as a psychiatric pharmacy specialist at Adventist Health Glendale. Dr. Puzantian also serves as Deputy Editor for the Carlat Psychiatry, Child Psychiatry, and Addiction Treatment Reports and is co-author of Medication Fact Book for Psychiatric Practice.  

    

Tom Smith, PharmD, BCPP

Thomas Smith joined the Manchester University faculty in August 2012 after completing a specialized residency in psychiatry and neurology at the University Medical Center at Princeton and Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Jersey. In addition to his core faculty responsibilities in the PharmD program, he is an instructor in the MS in pharmacogenomics program and provides clinical services at Parkview Behavioral Health. Dr. Smith earned his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Rutgers University.
