Target Audience

This course is designed for pharmacists, nurse practitioners or other healthcare professionals involved in the comprehensive medication management of psychiatric and/or neurological patients.

Session Summary

Increasingly, pharmacists are involved in direct patient care and management of patients through collaborative drug therapy management. As such, understanding illness trajectories is useful in assessment and recommendation of pharmacotherapy trials. This program will inform attendees of the current state of early intervention research in bipolar disorder.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe the clinical picture and course of bipolar disorder in youth.
  2. Appraise evidence examining bipolar at risk populations and characterizing initial and proximal prodromal states.
  3. Describe the use of a risk calculator to predict the onset of bipolar disorder in youth.
  4. Describe evidence for psychological and pharmacologic interventions for prodromal presentations and subthreshold symptoms in bipolar at risk populations.
  5. Recognize research gaps in studying risk factors and early symptom presentation in bipolar disorder.
