Target Audience
This course is designed for pharmacists, nurse practitioners or other health care professionals involved in the comprehensive medication management of psychiatric and/or neurological patients.
Session Summary
Although CPNP members can offer services that address some of the direst challenges in healthcare today, most health system and policy decision makers are not familiar with the role of pharmacists in advanced patient care roles. This presentation will share proven tools, methods, and resources for advancing the implementation and spread of psychiatric pharmacy services through administrators, legislators, and government agencies. Participants will leave with the ability to create a plan for how they can advocate for themselves and CPNP towards reaching their professional goals.

Dr. Steven Chen is an Associate Professor and Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs at the USC School of Pharmacy and the William A. Heeres and Josephine A. Heeres Chair in Community Pharmacy. He received his Pharm.D. from USC and completed a USC-affiliated residency in 1990. Dr. Chen was a quality assurance pharmacist and clinical pharmacy coordinator at the Department of Veterans Affairs before joining the faculty at USC in 1998.
Dr. Chen has received honorary fellowships from the California Society of Health-System Pharmacists, the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, and the National Association of Practitioners. He is a member of research and practice teams have been awarded the Best Practices Award from ASHP twice (2002 and 2008), the American Pharmacists Association Pinnacle Award (2007), and the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy Inaugural Community Transformative Award (2009). He received the USC School of Pharmacy Outstanding Alumnus of the Year Award and the American Pharmacists Association Pinnacle Award for individual career achievement in 2013. In 2014 Dr. Chen received the Exemplar Innovator Award from the UCSF Center for Excellence in Primary Care and Center for Care Innovation, in 2015 he received the American Heart Association Multicultural Initiatives Award and the Schweitzer Fellowship Leadership Award and the California Society of Health System Pharmacists Innovator Award. In 2016 Dr. Chen and his colleagues were among 23 innovations in the State of California to be featured at the Department of Health and Human Services Let’s Get Healthy event. He was recognized by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services in 2016 for his collaboration with The Partnership for Public Service that contributed to 87,000 lives saved, 2.1 million fewer patinet harms, and $19.8 billion in cost savings. In 2017 Dr. Chen received a 3rd Pinnacle Award through his partnership with the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation, and in 2018 he received the Pharmacist of the Year Award from the California Society of Health System Pharmacists. Dr. Chen has received multiple teaching awards from USC students and residents and is a Distinguished Faculty Fellow of the USC Center for Excellence in Teaching.
Dr. Chen is part of a team of USC faculty that has direccted over $15 million in grant-funded research focusing on the integration of comprehensive clinical pharmacy services into medical homes and the impact on healthcare quality, safety, and cost. He is Co-Investigator and the clinical manager of a $12 million CMMI grant that partners USC with the largest private Medicaid provider in the nation, evaluating the impact of 10 clinical pharmacy teams, each consisting of a clinical pharmacist, a pharmacy resident, and a clinical pharmacy technician compared to usual medical care. He is Co-Chair Emeritus of the HRSA Patient Safety and Clinical Pharmacy Services Collaborative, which has promoted the spread of clinical pharmacy service integration in medical homes across the nation since 2007.
