Target Audience

This course is designed for pharmacists, nurse practitioners or other health care professionals involved in the comprehensive medication management of psychiatric and/or neurological patients.

Session Summary

The discussion of sexual dysfunction can be a difficult topic for patients to discuss with their providers, and the diagnoses of sexual disorders and treatment options continue to evolve. After attending this presentation, participants will have a greater understanding of the spectrum of sexual dysfunction among men and women, feel comfortable initiating routine discussion of sexual function/dysfunction with patients, and gain confidence in making recommendations for changes in pharmacotherapy options tailored to the individual/sexual problem and supporting patient initiation of conversations with their prescriber.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify the spectrum of sexual dysfunction described in various nomenclatures: ICD-10, DSM-IV and -5, and other nomenclatures.
  2. Describe the prevalence and causes of sexual dysfunction and its impact on the mental health patient population.
  3. Explain how to screen for sexual dysfunction and how to obtain a thorough sexual history.
  4. Outline new developments, current treatment options, and adverse effects of the pharmacotherapy options in the treatment of sexual dysfunction.
