This course is designed for pharmacists, nurse practitioners or other health care professionals involved in the comprehensive medication management of psychiatric and/or neurological patients.
Many individuals begin to misuse substances in adolescence and young adulthood The presence of substance use disorders in adolescents has been linked to a number of negative outcomes, including death. The treatment of substance use disorders in adolescents must be appropriately tailored to meet the needs of the patient’s developmental stage, cognitive ability, and influence from family, friends, and community and should be multimodal in approach. Psychiatric pharmacists are in a unique position to critically evaluate the potential need for a pharmacologic approach to the treatment of substance use disorders in adolescents and to help treatment teams develop patient-centered, interdisciplinary approaches to care.

Presentation-Specific Disclosure: My presentation will include discussion of off-label, experimental, and /or investigational use of drugs or devices: This presentation will discuss the use of some medications that are FDA approved in adults but used off label in adolescents: naltrexone, acamprosate, disulfiram, n-acetylcysteine, nabilone, oxytocin, gabapentin, topiramate, SSRI antidepressants, buspirone, atomoxetine, clonidine, buprenorphine-naloxone, methadone, bupropion, varenicline and nicotine replacement therapy.
