Target Audience

This course is designed for pharmacists, nurse practitioners or other health care professionals involved in the comprehensive medication management of psychiatric and/or neurological patients.

Session Summary

The prevalence of insomnia has been cited to occur in up to 50% of the adult population. Medications used to treat insomnia are not without risks ranging from falls to memory loss and dependence. Participants will learn the latest evidence surrounding the treatment of insomnia, including the risks and benefits of pharmacotherapy. Following this session, participants will be able to provide evidence-based treatment recommendations regarding the use of these agents in insomnia.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe the current place in therapy of medication for the treatment of insomnia.
  2. Summarize the evidence of sedative hypnotics, antidepressants, and melatonin use for the treatment of insomnia.
  3. Evaluate the risks of sedative hypnotic use for the treatment of insomnia.
  4. Discuss best practices for patient education on risks vs benefits of sedative-hypnotics.
