If you are a pharmacist, nurse practitioner or other healthcare professional involved in the comprehensive medication management of psychiatric and/or neurological patients, we invite you to participate in this online course.

Session Summary

Specific knowledge, skills, and attitudes are required for working in psychiatry and providing care to patients with mental health needs. These are often difficult to obtain through didactic coursework, and require experiential (“hands on”) learning. Experiences available in psychiatric practice often only provide partial insight into the field or a specific skill. Simulation training offers the opportunity to bridge the gap between theory and practice in a safe and structured environment.

Simulation training is used in a variety of medical specialties and is recognized as an effective approach to enhance patient safety and teamwork in addition to other relevant clinical outcomes. Simulations in psychiatry are associated with significant positive effects in attitudes, skills, knowledge, and behaviors. Additionally, although limited, the available data suggests that simulation training in psychiatry is associated with improved patient outcomes. In this session, learners will gain exposure to simulation as a valuable tool for educators to teach clinical skills and to evaluate learners. This will include instruction on the essential techniques and components necessary for creating meaningful simulation experiences.
