Target Audience

If you are a pharmacist, nurse practitioner, or other health care professional involved in the comprehensive medication management of individuals living with mental health and/or substance use disorders, we invite you to participate in this online course.

Session Summary

This self-study course focuses on understanding compliance requirement standards established by national accrediting and regulatory agencies. Content includes a comprehensive outline on topics such as Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee, formulary management, Medication Use Evaluation, and performance improvement cycles are described. The Joint Commission standards, State Operations Manual F-tags and the roles of IRBs and various governmental agencies are also addressed in this course.

 

Course Requirements

You will proceed through the following steps to satisfactorily complete this course:

  • Review the full content of the activity and reflect upon its teachings.
  • Complete the post-test at the end of the activity no later than the closing activity date.
  • Complete the evaluation at the end of the activity.
  • If necessary, complete the post-test retest no later than the closing activity date.
  • Receive a passing grade (70%).
  • Provide the necessary details in your profile to ensure correct reporting by AAPP to CPE Monitor.

Participants in this course must complete an examination and achieve a score of 70% or greater. Up to two exam attempts are provided to each participant. Successful completion of the course also requires the completion of a course evaluation. Upon successful completion, ACPE credit is reported immediately to CPE Monitor although transcripts can be retrieved by participants online at https://aapp.org/mycpnp/transcript/acpe.

  2. Outline a plan to start a new service or evaluate a current service using the performance improvement cycle.
  3. Outline a program to monitor and prevent medication misadventures.
  4. Recognize the Joint Commission standards related to pharmacy practice in psychiatric settings.
  5. Describe the use of State Operations Manual F-tags in the pharmacological management of psychiatric disorders in long-term care facilities.
  6. Explain the basic ethical principles of the Belmont Report and its relationship to human subject research and clinical practice.
  7. Describe the roles of the institutional review board, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and Office for Human Research Protections in research that impact patients with psychiatric illness.
  8. Describe the role of Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services in the reimbursement process for healthcare, including pharmacy.
  9. Identify national organizations that provide support and advocacy for patients with mental illness and their families.
  10. Describe steps to be taken for compliance with the Drug Supply Chain Security Act.
  11. Describe the safe handling of hazardous medications in psychiatric settings as defined by USP General Chapter <800>.
  12. Apply principles of professional ethics to the issue of medication administration in patients that lack capacity to provide consent.
  13. Describe the characteristics of prescription drug monitoring programs.
  14. Discuss the evidence for the effectiveness of prescription drug monitoring programs.
  15. Describe disease surveillance and the national and international organizations that report on it.
  16. Define collaborative practice agreements and the common components of their regulations.
  17. State the roles of professionals involved in collaborative practice agreements and strategies for developing agreements.
  18. Describe resources available to pharmacists for the development of collaborative practice agreements.
