Alex A. Cardoni is Senior Scientist, Burlingame Center for Psychiatric Research and Education at The Institute of Living in Hartford, Connecticut. He is also Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Associate Professor Emeritus at the University of Connecticut.Professor Cardoni received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Pharmacy from SUNY Buffalo and Masters Degree in Hospital Pharmacy from The Ohio State University. He completed a 2-year residency in Hospital Pharmacy at OSU Hospitals in Columbus and initiated a psychopharmacology consultation service at Ohio State in 1970. In 1972, Professor Cardoni established the statewide Drug Information Service at the UConn School of Pharmacy. Subsequently he directed the University-based Poison Control Center (1976-84) and continued his work in psychiatry in the UConn Partial Hospital Program. He established psychopharmacology consult services later at Hartford Hospital (1987) and The Institute of Living (1994). In academia, Professor Cardoni led UConn’s transition to the entry-level Pharm D. curriculum, chaired the Department of Pharmacy Practice, and quadrupled the number of full-time pharmacy practice faculty. Research interests have included drug and poison service utilization, epidemiology of drug interactions, and tobacco use in psychiatric patients. Among his numerous awards, the Boelhoewer Award for Psychiatric Patient Care and Teaching and the Paul G. Pierpaoli Award for long-term contributions to pharmacy practice are most significant. He retired from the University of Connecticut in 2001 after 29 years of service. Professor Cardoni was Board Certified in Psychiatric Pharmacy in 1997 and is a Founding Member of CPNP. He currently resides in Ellington, Connecticut with his wife Judith. When not engaged in professional activities, he most likely can be found in his woodshop, "EllingWood", generating large amounts of sawdust and wood shavings, and building furniture.
