A CPNP educational activity, Developing a Treatment Plan for Insomnia When First-Line Options Fail, is available for registration now and will be available online the week of April 3. This application-based case is approved for 2.75 contact hours of ACPE credit and is designed for pharmacists and other healthcare professionals with advanced experience in psychiatry who have an interest in learning more about the treatment of insomnia. This hands-on activity provides the opportunity to develop an appropriate treatment and monitoring plan for a patient with insomnia. Learning is reinforced through a webinar delivered by Cindy Kirkwood, PharmD, BCPP, an examination with answer justifications, and an evidence-based, referenced case key. There is no fee for the activity and participants must successfully complete an exam and evaluation at the end of the activity in order to receive 2.75 contact hours of continuing pharmacy education credit.

Authored by Cynthia K. Kirkwood, PharmD, BCPP, and edited by Leigh Anne Nelson, PharmD, BCPP, this activity features a case scenario and a set of assessment questions requiring treatment planning over a period of time and several outpatient visits. Reinforcement of learning is aided through an educational webinar, answer justifications, and an evidence-based, referenced case key.

This case series is designed to:

  1. Identify clinical features and treatment issues as applicable to patients with complex and/or treatment resistant insomnia.
  2. Evaluate evidenced-based data regarding current and novel treatment approaches to address clinical needs of patients with insomnia.
  3. Apply evidence-based research findings to the clinical care of patients with complex and/or treatment resistant insomnia.
  4. Tailor individualized treatment plans for patients with insomnia and multiple comorbid disease states and drug-related problems to improve treatment outcomes.
