Phoenix, Arizona served as host city for the College of Psychiatric and Neurologic Pharmacist’s 17th Annual Meeting held April 27-30. This four-day conference hosted 625 attendees and featured nearly 30 hours of cutting-edge scientific presentations, three industry supported symposium, two product theaters and a display of 169 scientific posters. Deanna Kelly, PharmD, BCPP, Professor, University of Maryland, Baltimore, MD, served as Program Chair of the CPNP Annual Meeting. Sarah Melton, PharmD, BCPP, CGP, FASCP, BCACP, Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice, Gatton College of Pharmacy, East Tennessee State University, Johnson City, TN, served as chair of Recertification continuing education. CPNP’s 18th Annual Meeting will be held April 19-22, 2015 at the Marriott Tampa Waterside Hotel and Marina in Tampa, Florida.

Kicking off the meeting was a keynote address debate between Drs. Nassir Ghaemi and Joseph Goldberg questioning Are Atypical Antipsychotics Really Mood Stabilizers? Monday’s keynote address hosted a lively debate on the hot topic of medical marijuana with Colorado based health care providers Drs. Laura Borgelt and Abraham Nussbaum. Examining the critical issue of obesity in individuals living with severe mental illness was Dr. Jeffrey Friedman who discussed the role of leptin and treatment targets. Along with challenging, thought-provoking keynote addresses, the meeting provided over 20 additional hours of varied programming on topics such as NMDA antagonists, the DSM-5, Neurology, Violence and Mental Illness and much more.

The CPNP Foundation offered two events at the Annual Meeting raising over $4000 for the National Alliance on Mental Illness through the 7th annual NAMI Walk at the CPNP Annual Meeting and over $2000 for Phoenix Based Art Awakenings. Art Awakenings promotes empowerment and recovery through the power of creative expression with children and adults who are challenged by serious mental health, general mental health and substance use conditions.

In addition to providing high quality education, the following CPNP business and recognition was conducted at the CPNP Annual Meeting.

Officer transitions were announced with Julie Dopheide, PharmD, BCPP, Professor of Clinical Pharmacy, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, California, passing the gavel to Steven Burghart, DPh, MBA, BCPP, Director of Pharmacy, Rolling Hills Hospital, Franklin, TN. Also recognized as new President-Elect was Ray Love, PharmD, BCPP, FASHP, Professor, University of Maryland, Baltimore, MD. Drs. Burghart and Love will assume their duties beginning in July of 2014.
