• PGY2 Other Features: Adult Outpatient Clinic is a required learning experience of this residency. The learning experience is comprised of two (2) outpatient clinic modules, each 4 to 8 weeks in length, that focus on the progressive development of the resident as an outpatient psychiatric care pharmacy clinician. The resident will complete this learning experience primarily within the assertive community treatment (ACT) team clinic, which focuses on providing patient-centered pharmacotherapy management to patients with chronic outpatient psychiatric conditions. Adult Inpatient Clinic is a required learning experience of this residency. The learning experience is comprised of two (2) outpatient clinic modules, each 4 to 8 weeks in length, that focus on the progressive development of the resident as an inpatient psychiatric care pharmacy clinician. The resident will complete this learning experience primarily within the geriatric medical unit which focuses on providing patient-centered pharmacotherapy management to geriatric patients with chronic psychiatric and medical conditions in need of inpatient psychiatric care. The resident will additionally participate in a longitudinal inpatient staffing learning experience throughout the year that allows the resident to provide direct patient care services to all the patients within the inpatient psychiatric center. University Services and Education is a required learning experience of this residency. The learning experience is comprised of two (2) modules, each 8 weeks in length, that focus on the progressive development of the resident as an academic pharmacy preceptor and practice leader. The resident will complete this learning experience primarily at UB-SPPS and BPC. Completion of a Teaching Certificate Program, Journal Club, and ACPE-accredited continuing education program are required. (Note: Teaching Certificate may be waived if previously completed during PGY1) Neurology is a required 8-week learning experience in this PGY2 residency program. The role of the pharmacist assigned to this practice area is to provide direct patient care through a variety of clinical interventions and activities that focus on the progressive development of the resident as an effective neurologic/psychiatric pharmacist. The resident will complete this learning experience at the DENT Neurologic Institute in Amherst, NY. PTSD/Substance Abuse Mental Health Clinic is a required 4-week learning experience in this PGY2 residency program. The role of the pharmacist assigned to this practice area is to provide direct patient care through a variety of clinical interventions and activities that focus on the progressive development of the resident as an effective psychiatric pharmacist responsible for the care of patients diagnosed with substance abuse and/or PTSD (among other comorbid diagnoses). This learning experience will be at the DENT Neurologic Institute in Amherst, NY. Research and Project: The resident is required to complete at least one major project over the course of the year which focuses on the design, implementation, and/or evaluation of a clinical pharmacy service at BPC/OMH. Administration: The role of the pharmacist assigned to this practice area is to provide leadership and practice management oversight, thus the resident is expected to participate in several committees, such as Quality Management, P&T and contribute to pharmacy department planning and quality improvement initiatives. Other leadership and management experiences may take place within the Department of Pharmacy Practice at UB-SPPS

Clinical Pharmacy Services is a required learning experience of this residency. The learning experience is comprised of four (4) modules, each 4 to 8 weeks in length, that focus on the progressive development of the resident as the clinical pharmacist assigned to provide direct patient care through several clinical interventions and activities. The resident will complete this learning experience primarily within the inpatient units at BPC. Practice Management is a required learning experience of this residency. The learning experience is comprised of 2 (two) modules, each 6 months in length, that focus on the progressive development of the resident as a clinical pharmacist assigned to provide leadership and practice management oversight, thus the resident is expected to participate in several committees, such as Quality Management, P&T and contribute to pharmacy department planning and quality improvement initiatives. Other leadership and management experiences may take place within the Department of Pharmacy Practice at UB SPPS. Teaching and Education is a required learning experience of this residency. The learning experience is comprised of four (4) modules, each 4 to 8 weeks in length, that focus on the progressive development of the resident as an academic pharmacy preceptor, drug information specialist and practice leader. The resident will complete this learning experience primarily at UB SPPS and BPC. Completion of a Teaching Certificate Program, Journal Club, and ACPE-accredited continuing education program are required. General Medicine is a required 4-week learning experience in this PGY1 residency program. The role of the pharmacist assigned to this practice area is to be the clinical pharmacist on the general (family) medicine team. This learning experience allows the resident to round with an attending, residents, interns, nurse, and medical/pharmacy students to provide care and is sited at the Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo, NY. Pediatric and Geriatric are required 4-week learning experiences in this PGY1 residency program. The role of the pharmacist assigned to this practice area is to provide direct patient care through a variety of clinical interventions and activities that focus on the progressive development of the resident as an effective clinical pharmacist responsible for the care of age specific populations diagnosed with medical and psychiatric illnesses. This learning experience will be sited at the geriatric unit BPC and the Children’s psychiatric center in West Seneca, NY. Research and Project: The resident is required to complete at least one major project over the course of the year which focuses on the design, implementation, and/or evaluation of a clinical pharmacy service at BPC/OMH.

Program Philosophy

Our PGY2 pharmacy residency builds upon the PharmD education and PGY1 residency training, contributing to the development of clinical pharmacists in specialized areas of practice. Completion of PGY1 residency at our hospital allows for early commitment to our PGY2 program and preparation for advanced patient care and academia along with board certification

Site Special Features

The Buffalo Psychiatric Center is a 160 bed Joint Commission accredited inpatient psychiatric facility within the New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH) that also provides outpatient serves to thousands of individuals with serious mental illness in the Western New York Community. Clinical practice opportunities include general medicine adult, patients with serious mentally illness, pediatric and geriatric psychiatry with an additional focus on education and teaching. The program provides the flexibility to be individualized based upon candidate interests and goals.
