Target Audience

This course is designed for pharmacists, nurse practitioners or other healthcare professionals involved in the comprehensive medication management of psychiatric and/or neurological patients.

Session Summary

Despite the widespread use of opioids, the incidence of chronic pain has not decreased in the U.S. in the past 20 years. Pharmacists must understand the pathophysiology of chronic pain and educate both patients and providers on appropriate multimodal therapies. This presentation will explore the relationship between pathophysiology and pharmacology in chronic pain and provide plain language strategies to educate patients and providers.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify the common types of chronic musculoskeletal pain and describe the proposed pathophysiology of these disorders.
  2. Explain the role of glial cells in the mediation of pain, and glial cell activation in response to opioids.
  3. Apply the principles of pain physiology education in communicating central sensitization and its role in chronic pain with patients.
